FDA OKs Nexium in children age 1 to 11

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration has approved use of the drug Nexium in children aged 1 to 11 who have acid reflux disease.
FDA said Thursday it approved liquid and delayed-release capsules of Nexium in doses of 10 milligrams or 20 milligrams for these youngsters. It is already approved in doses of 20 milligrams or 40 milligrams for those aged 12 to 17.
Nexium, manufactured by AstraZeneca of Wilmington, Del., is a type of drug known as a proton pump inhibitor, which reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach and helps heal damage to the esophagus caused by excess acid.
The approval was for short-term use in these children, FDA said. The most common side effects in children were headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, gas, constipation, dry mouth and sleepiness, the agency said.
Everyone, and I mean everyone I know of who has suffered from acid reflux has totally recovered when they went on a low carb diet. Why? They tend to remove offending foods, like wheat, from their menu. But god forbid we diddle around with the diet of a one-year-old, and deprive him of Animal Crackers and toast. Better to pump him full of drugs that'll make him crampy, achey and either bunged up or overloading his pull-ups. Maybe they should just start fortifying their soy formula with Nexium. And hell, throw in a statin and some Paxil while you're at it - little bugger's gonna need it sooner or later, right?
FDA: F*cking Dumb Asses.

Don't forget they should add Ritalin to the formula as well. Then when they've been on this concoction for a few years we can discover a whole new mess of diseases.
Ritalin - how could I forget? Because hyperactivity, attention deficits etc couldn't possibly be caused by reactions to foods and/or food chemicals. Even if they are, better to keep eating them and just take drugs to counteract the effects.
New diseases - cha ching!

You say this sarcastically, but check out this oh-so-earnest article (scroll down till you find the Feingold diet): http://www.rncentral.com/nursing-library/careplans/25-of-the-most-ridiculous-and-ineffective-popular-diets
(I found that article on The Free Radical, a blog I admire quite a bit: http://breadandmoney.com/thefreeradical/?p=136)
How long before we start treating kids with Viagra?
I love the Free Radical too -I bought his book when I first started low carbing.
So it's wrong to teach children that behaviour etc can be influenced by nutrition - but ok to teach them to manage their health and behaviour with drugs? Amazing.
OMG - how horrid. Right after my lapband surgery my doctor IMMEDIATELY put me on a whole host of pills. A few I questioned and REFUSED to take most of them. But I took my Nexium obediently - thinking "it's a innocent pill".
Strangely I starting having severe dizziness and subsequent nausea. They blamed it on recent surgery, excess anethestics..everything BUT the Nexium - the new kid on the block in my body.
I searched and scoured the internet and found ONE article stating it was a side affect of Nexium. I called the doctors office the next day and informed them of my discovery. They said "No it's so safe and mild, there is no indication of those symptoms with Nexium". I said "thank you", hung up and stopped taking it. Surprisingly, NOT, the dizziness was gone in about 48hrs!!!
I feel for those kiddo's. Why can't we just feed them RIGHT and teach our parents to do what's so OBVIOUS to us??? I'm so sick, hearing about the drugging of our country!
You wouldn't want to offend all those millions of "caring" parents who feed their kids garbage day in and day out. Better to tell them that there's a magic pill! BTW, what is the likelihood that the same parents are overweight on the same kind of junk they feed their kids?
Well, if you teach kids that behavior is affected by what they eat, you're going to give them an eating disorder! Can't you hear the hysterical psychiatrists trying to blame Mom (never Dad, always Mom) for not letting the kid eat a Snickers bar?
Don't get me wrong; there's a place for psychiatry, and eating disorders are really bad news. But let's exercise a little common sense. There's a difference between a kid learning, "You know, my life is easier if I follow a specific diet" and a middle-schooler throwing up her lunch in the toilet.
Barbara, thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely check out the doc - I'm really interested in traditional diets, and especially disturbed at how native people have been affected by "white man's foods". I'm reading Stefansson's "My Life With The Eskimo" now, and I'll look into Dr. Wortman too - I never read the newspaper :)
Band-it - glad you found what the problem was. Amazing how the information is out there, but many doctors aren't looking any further than the info they're given.
Hi Tracy,
Dr. Wortman's blog is now active at

Can you please remove my email address from my last post? Thanks!
Barbara
Thanks Barbara - sorry, I misread your last comment and posted it! Duh. Removed it now :) and thanks again for letting me know about this! I'll be an avid reader of his blog, as will many other people I know.
I agree! Kids should not be eating so many carbs - an average child's diet today is 70% white flour and we all wonder why half the population suffers from a chronic illness. We let our kids eat poison and delight in how happy they are with their pizza and popsicles and then wonder why they get ear infections and all the other stuff as they get older.
It's the same with type II diabetes - standard of care is to let them eat as many carbs as they please and offset the poison with the antidote. It's sickening! Literally!!
